Santoro Oil's Cold Weather Conservation Tips for Your Home

Have a Preventative Maintenance Performed

Regardless of how you heat your house, prevenative maintenance will ensure that everything is operating at peak efficiency. An oil system inspection takes about 90 minutes and includes a thorough furnace or boiler cleaning; replacement of the oil filter and nozzle; testing of the burner and water heater; and inspection of the fuel tank.
(Preventative Maintenance is included in any Santoro Oil Service Plan.)

Fall Cleaning

Do a quick sweep of your home to make sure that boxes, furniture, and other items haven't been placed on or near radiators or heat/return air registers over the summer. If you have a chimney make sure that it cleaned before you use it for the first time. If you have a furnace make sure that your ductwork it is cleaned from the inside and is in working order.

Santoro Oil's Cold Weather Conservation Tips - Add a Programmable Thermostat

Add a Programmable Thermostat

Temperature "setback" with a programmable thermostat generally pays for the new thermostat in as little as one year. A programmable thermostat automatically lowers your temperature setting at night and then raises it in the morning - at the times and the temperatures you determine. We recommend keeping temperature variance within six degrees.

Attic Ventilation

Ventilation and Insulation

While it might seem odd to have cold air creep into your attic during the winter when you spend a lot of money to keep your home warm. Cold air in your attic helps to prevent against ice dams as snow melts at the bottom of the pack instead of the top. The cold air that is introduced is blocked by your insulation from getting into the rest of your home.

Watch Out for Sneaky Hot Water Waste

One drop every minute from your hot water faucet can add up to plenty of baths over the season, so check for dripping faucets everywhere in the house. Consider having a Santoro Oil licensed plumber install water-saving showerheads. They use up to one-third less hot water and that can add up to big savings.

Make Sure Your House Can Breathe

If your system has outside air intake vents installed with a sidewall-vented heating appliance, be sure that the vents are not blocked. Like all equipment that burns fuel, furnaces and boilers draw in air to ignite the fuel and to keep it burning efficiently. Fresh air vents are essential to a healthy home.

Seal Up Your Home

Letting air into the places you need them is just as important as blocking cold air from getting into places it shouldn't. If you've ever walked by a window or door and felt a draft then your home isn't sealed up as much as it could be. Make sure that all your windows are locked, while this seems like a simple tip locking your windows does press parts of the windows closer together. In some cases this can stop the draft, in cases that it doesn't there are many sealing products available.

The two most popular options are using a film that is heated around the trim of your windows or a type of gel that is put around the seams of your windows using a caulking tool. Either of these products should not damage the paint around your windows, however you should read product reviews before use.
